Dealing With the Loss of a Beloved Pet: The Rainbow Bridge Poem

On Friday, September 25, 2015, our family experienced another huge loss: our beloved yellow lab Max (which you may have seen a photo or two of throughout my blog).  He lived a very happy and healthy 15 years; having given us so many dearly cherished memories. He was my bush buddy, protector (he saved my life from a bear one year!), family member, and best friend (he always knew when I was sad and/or not feeling well and tried his best to comfort me just like my Sheba had done).

It’s never easy to lose a loved one … even when we know their time of transition is near. You just cannot ever be fully prepared. While I know that Max is still with us in spirit and is likely having a blast running after birds with Sheba, my heart is heavy with grief because of course it is the physical body that we are all missing. Even as I write this in my mind I can clearly hear Max’s excited barking that he’d do whenever he saw me return home. Perhaps it isn’t a memory but actually Max’s spirit trying to tell me that he is okay and isn’t in any more pain?

It will take a bit of time to get back to a relatively normal routine in the home here, all we can do is take one step and day at a time. So in the process of doing so, I have made this post as a tribute to my precious Max (and Sheba as well – my female yellow lab who transitioned three years ago). It is my hope to give comfort not just to myself, but to everyone who has experienced the loss of their furbaby.  Below I have posted a poem about the Rainbow Bridge – all I can say is I am looking forward to meeting them there with all my heart.

I have also included a link to an article that I wrote approximately five years ago regarding animal spirits and communicating with transitioned pets.

With much love and blessings to you all,

Lisa Caza

The Rainbow BridgeAuthor Unknown
‘There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.’
